List of Maronite patriarchs

List of Maronite patriarchs

This is a list of the 'Maronite Patriarchs of Antioch', one of the Eastern Catholic Churches. The first Bishop of Antioch was St. Peter, the head of the Apostles. The official title that the Maronite Patriarch assumes is "Patriarch of Antioch and all the East." For the Patriarchs of Antioch before John Maron, the list can be referred to the Antiochian Syriac Patriarchs. After the council of Chalcedon, and appointments of the Patriarchs by Byzantine emperors, and Muslim khalifas, the Maronites broke away and start electing their own Patriarchs. A list of Maronite Patriarchs of Antioch was written and published by bishop Giuseppe Simone Assemani, and Patriarch Simon Awad, which follows the ''Series of Maronite Patriachs'' written by Patriarch Estephan El Douaihy in the 17th century, but it is incomplete for the first centuries. Besides the Assemani's list, another list more detailed was written in Bejjeh in 1766 by Georges Saad.
